1. Why You Need the Odia InScript Keyboard
The Odia InScript (Indic Script) keyboard layout is the only keyboard layout permitted in Odisha government typing tests conducted by OSSC and OSSSC. It follows the BIS IS 16350 standard and is designed by C-DAC (Centre for Development of Advanced Computing).
Unlike phonetic keyboards that let you type English letters and get Odia characters, InScript assigns each physical key a specific Odia character. This is the layout used in all government exam computers. Installing the Odia InScript keyboard on your personal Windows 11 computer is essential for effective exam preparation.
Government Mandate: As per OSSC notification, only the InScript keyboard layout is accepted for Odia typing tests. Phonetic, transliteration, and Google Input Tools are not permitted in exam halls.
2. Step-by-Step Installation (3 Minutes)
Follow these steps to install the Odia InScript keyboard on your Windows 11 computer:
Open Windows Settings
Press Win + I to open Settings. Navigate to Time & Language → Language & Region.
Add Odia Language
Click "Add a language". Type "Odia" in the search bar. Select Odia (ଓଡ଼ିଆ) from the list and click Next.
Install Language Features
Ensure "Typing — InScript keyboard" is checked in the language features list. Click Install. Windows will download the Odia language pack.
Set InScript as Default
Click the three dots next to "Odia" in the language list, select Language Options, and confirm the keyboard layout is set to Odia InScript (not Odia Phonetic).
Pro Tip:If you see both "Odia InScript" and "Odia Phonetic" in the keyboard list, remove the Phonetic option. Always use InScript for exam practice.
3. How to Switch Between English and Odia
Once installed, switching between English and Odia is simple:
| Shortcut | Action |
|---|---|
| Win + Space | Toggle between installed keyboard layouts |
| Alt + Shift | Switch between languages |
| Taskbar Click | Click the language indicator (ENG / ODIA) in the taskbar |
The taskbar will show "ENG" or "ODIA" depending on the active keyboard. Click it to switch between layouts at any time. When "ODIA" is selected, your keyboard will type in the InScript layout.
4. Troubleshooting Common Issues
| Issue | Solution |
|---|---|
| Odia language not appearing in the list | Ensure your Windows 11 is updated to the latest version. Microsoft removed Odia support in very early builds but restored it in later updates. |
| Phonetic keyboard showing instead of InScript | Go to Language Options for Odia and remove the Phonetic keyboard layout if present. Keep only "Odia InScript". |
| Running Windows 10 or older | Windows 10 also supports Odia InScript. You can download the official keyboard from the Government of Odisha portal: tools.ova.gov.in. |
5. Start Practicing Right Away
Now that you have installed the Odia InScript keyboard on Windows 11, it is time to start practicing. Even without the keyboard installed, you can begin typing Odia immediately using our interactive course — it maps your English key presses to the correct Odia characters through the virtual InScript keyboard display.
For the most effective preparation, we recommend using both: the physical InScript keyboard on Windows 11 for muscle memory, and our on-screen guide to see which key produces which Odia character.
